JOB HUNTING SURVIVAL 101: STAYING 'TOUGH'

There's a saying, 'when the going gets tough, the tough get going'. Okay, so there you are, waiting for your check to arrive in the mail because your company has not paid you for a few months. Their cash flow is strained. Or, you're waiting for that weekly unemployment check thinking, 'how am I going to pay my bills in the next couple of months'? Those of us who are 'tough', who have 'been there... done that' and have survived tough times, know Darwin's evolution theory by heart:'...survival is for those who are most 'open-minded...'

Besides my own challenges, now my partner is unemployed after twenty years of steadily working. He's the one with a mortgage, credit cards, and other bills to pay. He is struggling. After going on several interviews, he has realized that his technical skills are not currrent. He's emerging from his shell shock, slowly, after never been laid off. He is too proud to ask for food stamps or thinks that he needs a career coach. After placing his resume on major job sites, he is strugglying about the phone not ringing, or having to answer to mindless headhunters all day who offer him contract positions and no solid leads.

My suggestions seem to fall on his deaf ears. Happiness for him now is thinking about the business loan that he knows he can obtain to open a new business, although he has never been in business! Asking questions for him is a necessary evil.  Obtaining specific information on various types of businesses, be it franchises, etc. is vital to his future entreprenurial success. He wants to change his career in his late forties. This will be a challenge. But seeking mentors or anyone who has  a specific business knowlege that will help him prepare a solid business plan is important.

Being jobless means staying organized. Having a daily schedule, whether it is making phone calls, going to the library, internet searches, taking a walk or buying groceries. Taking action today is crucial!

Not being productive has its pitfalls for those of us jobless, like my partner. He is not an extroverted 'people person'. With a flooded job market of numerous well-educated, experienced job hunters, being tough and staying tough is one thing. Becoming tough for the first time can be tougher.

Survival Tactics for Today's Jobless Nation

Survival Tactics for Today's Jobless Nation

New York City Jobless blues. Just had my first cup of coffee, and read emails. The total now is three; two friends, and my live-in boyfriend now belong to the nation of  jobless Americans. Three people in three weeks and counting. I may be next. All I have been doing lately is swapping stories of 'how to survive this market!

But friends and ex-colleagues are great networkers! Today's employment line has become a great place for swapping survival stories! Here's where one can find a quick tutorial on 'how to cope' after the Wall Street bust! I guess survival after all is for the fittest, the most flexible, and the chattiest! So, I decided to extoll on the virtues of going to your local unemployment office and finding out everything that you can regarding your benefits. But, what if you do not have any benefits or you are an independent contractor, who cannot claim unemployment insurance, COBRA, etc.? What to do? That's the tough challenge for many of today's jobless people.
